Bitaemo! Dauphin Preparing for Another Busy Festival Weekend
Posted On July 28, 2010

Dauphin, Manitoba – The City of Festivals is gearing up for its 3rd festival this month, as preparations are well underway in Dauphin for the 45th annual Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival and 10th annual Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce Street Fair.

The theme of this year’s festival, “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” reflects on the evolution of the festival since its inception in 1966.  “This is our 45th anniversary festival, and we are proud to be the largest and longest-running Ukrainian festival in Canada”, said CNUF 2010 President David Katcsma. “Our goal is to continue the awareness of Ukrainian culture and heritage in Canada, and provide entertainment for young and old alike.”

Festival organizers are anticipating a large crowd this year, greater than the 5,000-8,000 that usually pass through its gates every August long weekend.  Plenty of camping spots are still available but some areas have been filled completely.  Katcsma accredits the increase to the 45th anniversary milestone and the draw of two of their feature shows.

The adrenalin-filled performance of the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and rockers HAYDAMAKY from the Ukraine will wow the crowds on the Credit Union Main Stage, in addition to the long list of entertainers, artisans and authentic Ukrainian cuisine that keep people of all ages and backgrounds coming back year after year.

To set the party atmosphere in motion, the 10th annual Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce Street Fair will take place Thursday, July 29th from 8 am until midnight at the corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue NE.  “The Street Fair is more than just a great way to promote local business in Dauphin, but also a fun and unique way to kick off Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival”, stated Dana Andreasen, Office Manager for the Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, a community kolomeyka will be held in the streets at 9:00 pm to the music of Winnipeg-based Ukrainian party band, Sloohai.  The kolomeyka is a traditional Ukrainian dance that promises to get everyone dancing in the street.  Aside from a full day’s worth of award-winning bands and children’s entertainers, this year’s Street Fair offers the always popular baking from the Trembowla clay ovens, food vendors and artisans...and a few surprises.

The Street Fair is free to attend.  Information and tickets for the Ukrainian Festival are available at the gate, the CNUF office at 1550 Main Street, or by calling 1-877-474-2683.
